Notes from people who brought their own traces

These comments refer to specific modules on this site. Length and tone vary on purpose. One of them is a reservation; we kept it.

The cold-start module in Field Benchmark Mastery forced us to stop reporting a single “TTFD” number. We now publish a three-slice chart and the product channel finally stopped arguing about a 40 ms lab win that never appeared in Sukhumvit traffic.

Battery Drain Diagnostics taught me to read radio traces without guessing. I still wish the thermal homework used more mid-range chipsets; our users are not all on flagships, and the wall only had two of our actual SKUs.

Frame Timing for Product Teams is the first class where I could challenge an engineering slide without pretending I lived in systrace. We set a jank budget the same afternoon and it still held after a soak test.

Lab Protocol Design is meticulous. The exclusion-rules exercise saved us from publishing a weekend lab run that used a different build flavour. Would have liked a fifth day.

Network Condition Simulation finally gave us a fixture that reproduced the Asok handoff. Module 05 of the flagship had pointed at the same problem; the focused track let our QA lead run it without sitting the full Bench Lead seat.

Short version: we stopped putting a single fps average in the exec deck. The launch-note template from module 06 is now on our wiki.

Product team in discussion around a table

A Bangkok marketplace team arrived with a lab score that called checkout “fast enough.” Field complaints clustered after 18:00. During Bench Lead they ran module 03’s thermal soak on a device that matched their 40th-percentile SKU, then replayed a Thai 4G fixture from Network Condition Simulation.

The pause was not the payment SDK. It was a layout pass that only appeared after the SoC throttled, made worse by a radio retry. They withdrew the original score from the launch review and republished a budget with exclusion rules. Eight weeks later the evening complaint rate on that screen had dropped enough that support stopped tagging performance as the default cause.

Case study · fintech first-open after a brand refresh

A regional wallet rebuilt onboarding and celebrated a cooler lab cold start. Trace Reader notes were not enough; they moved to Field Benchmark Mastery mid-cohort. Module 02’s three-slice chart showed process birth had improved while first useful interaction had not — a webview feature tour was still blocking the ledger.

They kept the new visual layer and deferred the tour until after first balance render. The honest part of the write-up: they had almost shipped the vanity number. The limitation they still carry is iOS coverage; most of the teaching archive is Android-heavy, and they had to bring their own Instruments captures to office hours.
